Our History
Stone and Christy, P.A., located in Black Mountain, N.C., provides expert legal advice to residents and businesses of the Black Mountain, Swannanoa Valley area and beyond. From their office in central Black Mountain, the firm serves the legal needs of residents primarily in Buncombe and surrounding counties but also throughout Western North Carolina. The firm, best described as a general practice, provides legal representation in all civil matters including real estate (transactional and litigation), estate planning and administration, estate-based litigation, general civil litigation, collection, contract, landlord/tenant and minor criminal offenses.
The firm was founded by Richard B. Stone, known as “Dick” to his many friends. From 1950, when Mr. Stone began his practice in Black Mountain, to 1998 when Mr. Stone passed away, he earned the respect of a great many friends and clients. Serving as Mayor of Black Mountain from 1957 to 1975, Mr. Stone served the community in a variety of capacities, including volunteer attorney for the Town of Black Mountain for many years. Dick’s presence was so great that the firm is regularly reminded by clients of Mr. Stone’s small town, common sense oriented approach to legal problems.
Bill Christy joined Mr. Stone in 1995, to form Stone and Christy, P.A. After Mr. Stone’s passing, Bryant Webster joined Stone & Christy in 2000, followed by James Ellis in 2001, Barrett McFatter in 2014, and Benjamin Many in 2021. Bill Christy retired from the Firm in December, 2021, but remains Of Counsel, handling limited matters. Bryant, James, Barrett and Ben continue the long tradition of caring for clients and meeting their legal needs, stressing the “counselor” role of service as an attorney.
The firm takes pride in providing effective legal advice for clients whose personal and business interests place them in a wide variety of situations. Attorneys and staff at the firm take pride in providing excellent service to clients while remaining accessible to those clients to the greatest extent possible. High priorities for the firm include returning calls and emails promptly, keeping clients both satisfied and well informed of the status of their case, providing exceptional legal advice while adhering to high ethical standards, staying involved in community activities and creating an enjoyable and rewarding atmosphere for attorneys, staff, and clients.
